If the entrance to Tasmania's Macquarie Harbour were not so narrow and so dangerous, Strahan would no doubt have been a major city and port. Many a ship has been lost at the entrance, however, the name Hells Gate refers to the penal colony of Sarah Island that lay ahead for the convicts transported here by ship. *Editorial use only.
